Davis Law is a full-service shale oil and gas boutique law firm that provides certified title opinions to large and regional producers, investors, and mineral buyers. About 75% of the work that Davis Law does is title work, while the other 25% is comprised of shale oil and gas related legal matters that include original title opinions, supplemental title opinions, division order title opinions, preparations of curative title documents, and shale oil and gas litigation. Additionally, the law office is equipped to complete any curative requirements and handle litigation related to mineral rights and industry-specific issues.

caraIn 2008, a personal experience sparked an interest in shale oil and gas industry law for Cara Davis, Principal, Davis Law, and helped her realize the huge impact the Marcellus Shale would have on the region. Afterwards, Davis, who was already working at another law firm, continued to develop her knowledge and skills about the Marcellus Shale, paying detailed attention to the analysis of documents and records pertaining to the conveyance of real property, minerals, and shale oil and gas.

Then in 2011 after spending years in general practice, she combined her interest in the shale oil and gas industry with her expertise in title work and founded Davis Law (formerly known as the Law Offices of Cara C. Davis) in Belle Vernon in southwestern Pennsylvania in the heart of the Marcellus, solely to deal with the shale oil and gas industry.

Shortly after, her husband, Attorney Brian Teslovich, joined her as she quickly gained clients. The firm has now grown to include over a dozen attorneys and support staff. True to the regional shale gas development, Davis Law has attorneys licensed in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio. Davis, herself, is admitted to practice law in both the State of Ohio and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. She has spent time in project management, issued hundreds of certified title opinions, and studied the intricacies of shale oil and gas law.

Davis’s love of law started early while growing up in Brownsville, PA. Davis says, “I was inspired by my dad [also an attorney] at a very early age. I would go and hear him argue cases. I even remember getting out of school early to watch him pick a jury.” Pursuing her dream, Davis earned a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from California University of Pennsylvania (Cal U) then her Juris Doctorate from Duquesne University’s School of Law in 2003.

cara1In addition to her duties at Davis Law, life has come full circle for Davis, who is now passing on her knowledge to students with a love of law at her alma mater. Davis is an Adjunct Professor for Real Estate Law at Cal U. She teaches Real Estate Law 350 online and covers everything from the bundle of rights associated with land, namely minerals, to how the Dormant Mineral Act in Ohio affects property owners.

2000px-Cal_U.svgDavis credits Dr. Christina Toras, Chair and Associate Professor, Department of Professional Studies, Cal U, for getting her involved with teaching at Cal U. Toras developed two land management programs for Cal U that are law, geology, and GIS-based to meet the growing needs of the shale oil and gas workforce in the greater Pittsburgh region. Davis expressed, “I was so excited to learn that my alma mater, Cal U, started a land management program that was really geared at helping current students and those in the work force who are ready for a change be well equipped to work in the shale oil and gas industry. I just wanted to be a part of it!” Davis added the experience has been rewarding, and also challenging at times, but being a part of the program has exceeded her expectations.

Also, Davis continually shares her expertise through her blog, radio interviews, and at shale oil and gas industry seminars and events. She has served as a continuing legal education instructor for the Energy Industry Training Series on Landman Best Practices, where she presented on ethics, and has mentored interns at Davis Law and students with The Shale Academy. In addition, Davis is actively embedded in community outreach. She frequently participates in fundraisers, having been a Pink Gilda’s Club sponsor and participated in Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society.

Davis is an active member in organizations, such as WEN (Women’s Energy Network), YPE (Young Professionals in Energy) Pittsburgh, YWPE (Young Professional Women in Energy), NAPW (National Association of Professional Women), Fayette County Bar Association, the Pennsylvania Bar Association, EMLF (Energy & Mineral Law Foundation), ABADO, and MLBC (Michael Late Benedum Chapter) of the American Association of Professional Landmen (AAPL).

Although passionate about her career, Davis expressed, “The highlight of my day is spending time with my husband and three children.” Additionally, Davis coaches youth basketball in her hometown of Brownsville, where she was once a basketball player, who received many awards. Davis continued to play basketball into college. She says that is something that she is “very proud of.”

Honored with many accolades along the way, Davis has been awarded the National Association of Professional Women (NAPW) Woman of Year Award in 2013 and 2014 for her leadership in law. In addition, Davis was awarded one of the first WING (Women in Natural Gas) Awards in 2013. The criteria for the WING Awards includes being a woman, who: is employed in the shale oil and gas industry; contributes to community outreach efforts; acts as a role model and provides leadership qualities for future women in energy; and displays integrity, commitment, and high standards in her daily work. In addition, Davis Law was awarded the 2014 Northeast Oil & Gas Awards Law Firm of the Year Award and is a finalist this year for the same category.

cara3A leader in shale oil and gas industry law, Davis relayed, “Our attorneys have worked in nearly every position from seasoned landmen and dedicated abstractors to title reviewers. They have gone to great law schools and could work for big law firms, but they choose to stay with us. We are dedicated to increasing our knowledge about the ever changing shale oil and gas industry and providing the highest quality legal service to our clients. When you work with our law firm, you get the experience of a corporate law firm, but the care of a personal friend. When you call us, we’ll call you back.”
